Making Cars
Still no work yet. =)Today we had a tour of the whole Automotive Manufacturing Plant.
That was really cool.
It was sort of an induction/orientation tour and it took the whole day walking
around the whole plant.
We got to see how a flat piece of metal gets pressed into shapes of doors and roofs
and how all these got wielded together to form the whole body of the car.
Next was the paint shop process which was a very long process there was at least
3 different layers of paint and chemicals covering the body and lots of baking processes.
I loved watching the automated painting.
There were like 8 different mechanical arms and they were all moving in all sorts of directions but yet still synchronized in covering the whole body with paint.
Next part that was really interesting was the assembly of the engine and the
chassis (the bottom part of the car which holds the axle for the wheels and the
engine and the gearboxes) Everything was made from scratch there so you could
see the assembly of the whole engine and even the machining of the gears.
It was really amazing to see how everything finally fit together in the end,
all the intricate parts, to form a car ready to be test driven.
Because it was an assembly line production (the line is about 5km long)
Every 10 mins a new car was made. Too bad we werent allow any photographs
i guess the company has to protect its techniques somehow =)
I was introduced to my section which i would be working in. That is the PVT (Plant Vehicle Team)
The head of my Dept was a really really nice guy.
He actually had a project planned for me already but upon meeting me he said he will put the
project on hold and he actually wants to introduce me to the place and then allow me to decide
what would i actually want to do.
So in my department.. what i do is that we ensure quality for the products like the Scorpio, Bolero, XYLO and the Logan. These are the cars that are being produced at the plant.
I was given 3 choices.
First choice was to work on the BODY AND TRIM of the car. This included the design of the body, the trims are like the interior, seats, seat belts, and all the minor stuff. The thing i like about this section is that the people here are really nice. They were like fresh grads and some
were also doing their intern here so they were very friendly and helpful with me.
The second choice would be to work on the Electric system of the car/cooling system. This included the alternator, air con, all the lights and battery of the car. This side didnt really interest me.
The third choice would be to work on the chassis of the car, the transmission, suspension and the brakes. I felt that this was the coolest job. cos after this i would be able to gain so much experience on working on cars. However the ppl in the department are really senior staff so im not sure if i'll have much fun here.
Anw i'll just sleep over this. i think i need to make my decision tmr.....
